How to Register for the Foundations of Reading Test (Step by Step)
Step 1: Find Your State's Testing Portal
The FORT is administered through Pearson, but each state has its own registration portal. Visit your state's NES or MTEL testing website to begin. For example, Wisconsin uses wi.nesinc.com, Connecticut uses ct.nesinc.com, and Massachusetts uses mtel.nesinc.com. If your state is not listed on a state-specific portal, use the general NES site at nestest.com.
Step 2: Create Your Account
Create a Pearson testing account with your full legal name (as it appears on your government-issued ID), email address, and contact information. Your name must match your ID exactly — any discrepancy could prevent you from testing on exam day.
Step 3: Select Your Test
Select test code 890 (Foundations of Reading). Some states may still show code 190 or 090 — select whichever code your state requires. The content is the same regardless of the code.
Step 4: Choose Your Testing Method
You have two options: (1) Test at a Pearson VUE testing center near you, or (2) Test online with live remote proctoring from home. Testing center appointments are 4 hours and 15 minutes. Online appointments are 4 hours and 30 minutes. Both include a 15-minute tutorial before the exam begins. Online testing requires a private room, webcam, microphone, and stable internet connection.
Step 5: Pay and Schedule
The registration fee is $139, payable by credit or debit card. Select your preferred date and time. Testing center availability varies by location, so register early to get your preferred date. If you need to reschedule, you must do so at least 24 hours before your appointment to avoid losing your fee.
After the Exam
Score reports are typically available within 5 weeks of your test date. You can view your scores on your Pearson account. If you do not pass, you must wait at least 30 days before retaking the exam. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but you must pay the $139 fee each time.
